Exams

The exam schedule is carefully prepared using course registration data and takes departmental exam requirements, university policies, and room availability into account.

Departments can make changes to the exam schedule after it is published, including late requests, cancellations, or location updates. Always check your personalized schedule in Workday for the most up-to-date information.

All exams follow UBC policies and regulations. Be sure you understand your responsibilities before taking your exam (e.g., arriving on time, bringing required materials, and following exam conduct rules).

Exam hardships and clashes

This information applies only to students on the Okanagan campus. While the guidelines below are helpful, refer to the official examination policies and regulations for the most up-to-date information.

Check your exam schedule carefully to see if you have an exam hardship or clash, and to secure alternate arrangements.

What is an exam hardship?

An exam hardship happens when you have 3 or more exams in a 27-hour period (e.g., The first exam begins at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, the second at 3:30 p.m. the same day, and the third at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday).

You are entitled to reschedule the second exam.

If you believe that you have an exam hardship, follow the steps below:

  • Contact the instructor of the second exam:
      • Winter Session: at least 1 month before the exam
      • Summer Session: at least 2 weeks before the exam
  • If unresolved, contact your department head or dean/director.
  • If more than 3 exams are within 27 hours of each other, repeat the process for each extra exam.

What is an exam clash?

An exam clash happens when exams overlap in time or are scheduled at the same time.

If you believe that you have an exam clash, follow the steps below:

  • Contact your instructor(s) to arrange an alternate time, as soon as possible.
  • If unresolved, contact your department head or dean/director.
