Needs-Based Funding

If you find yourself faced with an unexpected expense or financial distress, you may be eligible for needs-based funding. 


You are encouraged to apply for financial aid if you are experiencing, or expect to experience, financial distress as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak or other factors. 

Eligibility will be determined based on individual circumstances and demonstrated need. For the 2021-22 year, UBC has added an additional $2.05M, with another $150k contributed by the SUO of UBC, in needs-based funding for students in urgent financial need, with specific funds available to support: 

  • Students whose families have been affected by the pandemic through job loss or other loss of income. 
  • International students requiring support to cover self-isolation or quarantine expenses required upon arrival in Canada. 
  • Students unable to cover to cost-of-living expenses related to on- or off-campus housing or food purchases. 
  • Other individuals with demonstrated need.

You only need to complete one application form to be considered for all of the above types of funding.

Technology Bursary 

If you are facing an unexpected technological expense that is preventing you from engaging in your online learning, you will be eligible to apply for the technology bursary.  An advisor will be able to determine your eligibility for a needs-based technology bursary to help offset the cost of repairing or replacing failing technology. 

Applications for this bursary will be open from July 26 – August 4th. Please check back during those dates to apply.
