Taxes

2024 T2202 and T4A tax forms are now available In the UBC Official Documents tool (ODMT)

Note: You will be emailed when 2025 tax forms are available. Please ensure your email address and home address in Workday are correct.

In Canada, you must file your taxes for the previous calendar year by April 30.

UBC issues the tax forms listed on this site in late February.

UBC is only able to provide T2202 and T4A tax forms for the past 7 years. In accordance with our records retention policy and Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) guidelines, requests for tax documents older than 7 years cannot be fulfilled.

How to access tax forms

You can access available tax forms from the UBC Official Documents tool in Workday. Alumni and former students who do not have access to Workday can log into the UBC Official Documents tool directly.

Follow the step-by-step instructions on downloading your tax forms.

If you are logging into the UBC Official Documents tool for the first time, you need to wait 3 hours after logging in for your information to sync.

Tax years and academic years

Tax forms are issued for the previous tax year, which starts in January and ends in December. The academic year starts in September and ends in August, so your tax form may include amounts from two academic years.

For example, in 2026, you will receive tax forms for the 2025 tax year. The 2025 tax year includes:

2025 tax year Academic year
January to April 2025 2024 Winter Term 2
May to June 2025 2025 Summer Term 1
July to August 2025 2025 Summer Term 2
September to December 2025 2025 Winter Term 1

T2202 tax form

The T2202 tax certificate is issued to students registered in eligible courses and programs, and is used to claim a credit for income tax deductions. The certificate contains the amount of eligible tuition and/or fees paid for the tax year (more than $100) and the number of months a student was registered (full-time or part-time). The T2202 replaced the T2202A beginning with the 2019 calendar year.

Exclusions apply if fees or charges are not yet paid by the student, or if they are reimbursed and therefore not included in the student’s income.

You can use your T2202 in your own tax return, or transfer the amount to a family member. Get details from the Canada Revenue Agency.

T2202 amendments

If any information on your tax certificate has been changed after it was originally issued, an amendment will be noted. These changes will be made by Enrolment Services or your faculty and updated at the end of each month.

Application fees

Application fees for admission to UBC are not included in your Tuition and Enrolment Certificate (T2202). Since these fees are paid before a student is admitted and enrolled in Workday, please use the receipt you received at the time of payment when filing your taxes.

Co-op student information

Before the 2024 tax year, students enrolled in a co-op term were not considered full-time or part-time, and were not eligible to report those months on their taxes.

Starting in the 2024 tax year, if you are enrolled in a co-op term you are eligible to claim part-time months for that time. UBC will report your part-time months on your T2202 form.

T4A tax form

If you have received a bursary, scholarship, award, Teaching Certificate, Passport to Education, or Faculty/Staff Tuition Fee Waiver as a dependant, then you will be issued a T4A. The amount on your T4A shows the total funding you received in the tax year, which may not equal the total you received for the academic year.

Tuition paid by a sponsor is considered taxable income. However, the sponsoring organizations issue the T4A forms for this income, not UBC.

T4 tax form

If you were employed by UBC on a Co-op work term, as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Residence Advisor (RA), or any other position, such as Work Learn, you’ll receive a T4 tax form in the “Benefits and Pay” app in Workday. Follow these instructions to access your T4 from UBC.

Social insurance number (SIN) for T2202 and T4A

Your tax certificate(s) will include the Social Insurance Number UBC has on file for you. Provide your SIN to be included on your T2202 or T4A tax form in Workday. Learn how to add your SIN or ITN in Workday.

Non-residents of Canada are not required to provide a SIN unless you have earned income while in Canada. If you are not eligible for a SIN number, you might be eligible for an Individual Tax Number (ITN).

1098-T tax form

If you are filing taxes in the United States, you may be asked to produce the Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement, used for qualified tuition and related expenses paid during the tax year. UBC is an eligible educational institution because of participation in the U.S. Direct Loan Program.

UBC does not issue the Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement. As a Canadian institution, UBC only provides Canadian federal (T2202, T2202A) tax receipts.

Claiming tuition and related expenses without a 1098-T

For the most up to date information on claiming tuition and related expenses without a 1098-T go to Public 970, Tax Benefits for Education.
