T2202 tax form
The T2202 tax certificate is issued to students registered in programs, and is used for filing income taxes. The certificate contains the amount of eligible tuition and/or fees paid for the tax year and the number of months a student was registered (full-time or part-time). The T2202 replaced the T2202A beginning with the 2019 calendar year.
You can use your T2202 in your own tax return, or transfer the amount to a family member. Get details from the Canada Revenue Agency.
T2202 amendments
If any information on your tax certificate has been changed after it was originally issued, an amendment will be noted. These changes will be made by Enrolment Services or your faculty and updated at the end of each month.
Application fees
Application fees for admission to UBC are not included in your Tuition and Enrolment Certificate (T2202). Since these fees are paid before a student is admitted and enrolled in Workday, please use the receipt you received at the time of payment when filing your taxes.
Co-op student information
Before the 2024 tax year, students enrolled in a co-op term were not considered full-time or part-time, and were not eligible to report those months on their taxes.
Starting in the 2024 tax year, if you are enrolled in a co-op term you are eligible to claim part-time months for that time. UBC will report your part-time months on your T2202 form.
T2202A tax form
The tax credit amount for the tuition and fees paid in the calendar/tax year. The T2202A was issued for the 2018 calendar year and all prior years. The T2202A was replaced by the T2202 beginning the 2019 calendar year.
All students registered during the 2018 calendar year (and all prior years) received a T2202A for tuition and student fees for the previous tax year. You can use this in your own tax return, or transfer the amount to a family member. Get details from the Canada Revenue Agency.
T4A tax form
If you have received a bursary, scholarship, award, Teaching Certificate, Passport to Education, or Faculty/Staff Tuition Fee Waiver as a dependant, then you will be issued a T4A. The amount on your T4A shows the total funding you received in the tax year, which may not equal the total you received for the academic year.
T4 tax form
If you were employed by UBC on a Co-op work term, as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Residence Advisor (RA), or any other position, such as Work Learn, you’ll receive a T4 tax form in the “Benefits and Pay” app in Workday.
Social insurance number (SIN) for T2202 and T4A
Your tax certificate(s) will include the Social Insurance Number UBC has on file for you. Provide your SIN to be included on your T2202 or T4A tax form in Workday. Learn how to add your SIN or ITN in Workday.
Non-residents of Canada are not required to provide a SIN unless you have earned income while in Canada. If you are not eligible for a SIN number, you might be eligible for an Individual Tax Number (ITN).
1098-T tax form
If you are filing taxes in the United States, you may be asked to produce the Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement, used for qualified tuition and related expenses paid during the tax year. UBC is an eligible educational institution because of participation in the U.S. Direct Loan Program.
UBC does not issue the Form 1098-T, Tuition Statement. As a Canadian institution, UBC only provides Canadian federal (T2202, T2202A) tax receipts.
