Note taker

A peer note taker is hired by the DRC to share their class notes with the student.

Instructor Responsibility

  • Be aware of the accommodation.
  • The DRC manages the peer note takers. Occasionally, instructors are asked to help recruit a note taker in a class where the DRC is having difficulty recruiting.

Student Responsibility

  • Request the accommodation within the first few weeks of class.

Assistive Listening Device

The student requires direct amplification of the lecture.

  • Instructor may be requested to wear a transmitter.

Audio Record Lectures (instructor to be notified in advance)

The student will record lectures. All recordings are for personal study purposes only and cannot be shared or made public in anyway. Students with this accommodation are made aware of the conditions of this accommodation.

  • Instructors are notified in the accommodation letter that a student has this accommodation.

Student Responsibility

  • Provide the instructor with the accommodation letter as soon as possible in the term.

Medical equipment/supplies/food

The student needs to have easy access to these items for medical reasons.

Assistance during practicum

The student will require assistance of some sort during a practicum placement.

This accommodation is vague to allow for the many different types of assistance that may be required.

Instructor Responsibility

  • Instructor/Field coordinator will need to take this requirement into consideration in arranging a practicum placement. Consultation with the faculty will be done as early as possible to help determine specific needs of the student.

Student Responsibility

  • Request this accommodation as soon as possible.

Assistance with laboratory procedures

The student will require some type of assistance in a laboratory setting. The assistance is often related to a mobility issue.

Instructor Responsibility

  • Instructor/Lab Manager will be consulted in the arrangement of the required assistance.
  • The DRC hires the assistant.

  • Request this accommodation as soon as possible.

Captioning (usually remote)

The student requires captioning of lectures.

Instructor Responsibility

  • Be aware of the accommodation.
  • Instructors may be requested to wear a microphone and minimally assist in set up for the captionist to hear the lecture.
  • The DRC arranges and pays for the captioning.

May occasionally miss class for medical reasons

The student has regular medical appointments and/or has an unpredictable, episodic medical condition that prevents them from attending every class.

Students with this accommodation are aware that there is no amelioration for missed classes. Note takers are not provided for missing classes.

Instructor Responsibility

  • Instructors cannot penalize a student for not attending a class. E.g. loss of participation marks.

  • Provide the instructor with their accommodation letter as early as possible in the term.

Participating in class discussion

The student may not be able to readily and easily participate in class discussion.

May get up, move around, or take short breaks during class

The student may need to move around and/or leave during class.

American Sign Language Interpreting

The student requires interpreting during class.

Instructor Responsibility

  • Interpreters are hired and arranged for by the DRC.
  • The Interpreter stays near the front of the class, interprets the lecture and any class discussion or questions.

Specialized seating in class

The student requires a particular type of chair/seating in the class.

  • The DRC will arrange for chairs to be placed in classrooms.

Assignment Extension (instructor should be notified prior to the assignment deadline)

The student may need assignment extensions due to medical reasons.

Instructor Responsibility

  • This accommodation is requested by the student directly to the instructor and sometimes through the TA or lab TA (whoever is receiving the assignment). A new deadline is negotiated without any penalty for late submission of the assignment.

Student Responsibility

  • Provide the instructor with the accommodation letter as early as possible in the term.
  • Request the accommodation from the instructor as soon as possible and before the deadline of the assignment.

Access to lecture notes/course materials in advance when possible

The student requires more time to prepare for the class and/or needs alternate format for the materials being used in class to be able to access them during class.

  • Instructor to provide the materials in advance of the class.

Student Responsibility

  • Provide the instructor with the accommodation letter as early as possible in the term.
  • Make the request to the instructor for advance materials.
