ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Come with us and discover Berlin! This is an exciting NEW opportunity for UBC Students to leave the traditional classroom behind and earn 6 credits exploring art and culture in Germany. With over 400 Art galleries and 170 museums Berlin has been the known as the creative center of Europe since the 90’s. Since the fall of the Berlin wall artists, creatives and cultural enthusiasts flocked to the city and as a result Berlin boasts one of the richest scenes in Europe for Art, nightlife and cultural festivals.
For this exciting new course, students from all fields of study are invited to enroll and join visual art Instructors Jorden & David Doody for two weeks to discover the creative magic of Berlin. Students interested in learning about contemporary art will earn elective credits through museum tours and visits to major public monuments, art galleries and vibrant street art. In the Flaneur tradition, students will examine the visual culture, public art in the streets, canals and alleyways of Berlin. Students will learn from hands on, and in person experiences. Learning activities will introduce and explore travel journaling through photography, creative writing, and sketch-booking. This experiential learning will be supplemented with critical readings and personal reflections that add context and history to the fascinating sights the group with experience. No prior art experience is necessary for students to embark on this educational adventure! All you need is the desire to explore, experience and share!
Don’t expect a typical classroom setting, this course will offer new venues for learning every day! Our classroom will be the entire city where we will view, discuss and develop our own artistic skills in response to the art we engage with.
Students will stay in accommodations in the cultural hub and use public transit to explore the different neighbourhoods of this fascinating city. With a revival of murals and public works in recent decades, the areas we will be touring will feel like open-air museums and we’ll also be visiting some of the most famous galleries and museums in the art world.

This will ensure that all students despite their past experiences with art will be well prepared to soak up all the culture we encounter once we arrive in Berlin!
Week 3 & 4 (Berlin, Germany)
Students will arrive independently and travel to the accommodation on the Sunday before classes start. Our first day together in Berlin will be a classroom-based orientation day where we will bring all the students together and introduce all the assignments, activities and travel guidelines. Group Activities will be scheduled from 10am – 6 pm daily Monday to Friday. Students will get weekends and evenings off to explore the city independently or in small groups. We will have 10 full days of instruction in Berlin. In a city with so much history and more then 400 art galleries and 170 museums we will have no problem stacking each day with something new. Each day of class will be scheduled to highlight a major museum, contemporary art gallery, public works of art, historical monuments and architectural marvels.
