Tips for navigating career events and fairs

  • Prepare a short introduction. Have a 30-second summary of who you are, your area of study, and what you are looking for. Practice saying it confidently and clearly.
  • Dress professionally. First impressions matter. Choose attire that reflects the industry you are interested in and shows you are serious about your future.
  • Bring copies of your resume. Keep them in a folder or portfolio so they stay clean and organized. Be ready to hand them out when appropriate.
  • Do your research ahead of time. Know which employers will be at the event and prepare questions to ask them. This shows initiative and helps you stand out.
  • Be mindful of time. If an employer is speaking with a large number of students, be respectful of how long you engage and make the most of your time.
  • Be ready to talk about yourself. People may ask how you are doing or what led you to your current path. Have a few thoughtful, authentic answers prepared.
  • Follow up. If you make a good connection, ask for a business card or contact information and send a follow-up email within a day or two to say thank you and reinforce your interest.
