IMED – Mandatory temporary insurance that covers the first three months before you are covered by Health Insurance BC (MSP).  It covers emergency hospitalization and medical services (including doctor’s visits) for unexpected sickness or injury.  Students who already have MSP or another Canadian Provincial Health insurance plan can opt of IMED insurance.   There is a fee for this insurance.

Health Insurance BC  - The Medical Services Plan (MSP) insures medically required services provided by physicians and supplementary health care practitioners, laboratory services and diagnostic procedures. All residents of B.C. are required to enroll with MSP.  You are eligible for coverage after completing a waiting period that normally consists of the balance of the month of arrival plus two months. You should apply for MSP coverage immediately after arriving in B.C., rather than at the end of the waiting period, to allow time for your application to be processed.  There is a fee for this insurance.

Extended Health & Dental Plan for UBC Okanagan Students (UBCSUO) - This plan goes above and beyond what is offered by Health Insurance BC (MSP).  It is more like the coverage that you might receive from an employer.  For example, MSP covers the cost of your visit to a general practitioner, but not the cost of the prescription drugs.  UBCSUO plan provides you with coverage for many medication that your physician may prescribe for you. USCSUO plan also covers many other services that MSP does not, such as Dental Benefits, Travel Health Coverage, and more.   All students who pay fees to the UBCO Students’ Union are automatically enrolled in the UBCSUO Health and Dental Plan.  There is a fee for this insurance.
