Peer-to-Peer Support

UBCO has a variety of Peer-to-Peer programs that provide support and guidance to UBC students.

Student Connectors

During the summer, and into Winter Term 1, all incoming undergraduate students at UBCO are matched with a Student Connect – Transition Mentor (an upper-year student) who supports new students in their transition to university and supports their progression through UBC 101 Online orientation. This program is designed for all new-to-UBCO undergraduate students.

Student Connectors are also available throughout Winter Terms 1 and 2 at the Student Connect Desk (UNC 206) to support all students (any year level). Student Connectors can assist with navigating resources, providing guidance and referrals, and providing information about events or opportunities for involvement at UBC Okanagan.

Indigenous Programs and Services

Indigenous Programs and Services (IPS) Peer Mentors are student leaders who mentor first-year and new-to-UBC Indigenous students and work to plan social, academic, cultural, and community engagement initiatives.

IPS also offers tutoring support for some courses. The Indigenous Peer Tutors provide integrated, holistic support for your learning. From understanding key concepts and themes in your courses to navigating your online lectures and note-taking, you have access to a one-stop-shop for all of your studying needs.

Student Learning Hub

The Student Learning Hub is your one-stop shop for free and flexible learning supports and resources. We invite undergraduate students from all disciplines and year levels to access a range of peer-to-peer supports that include:

  1. Subject Tutors: Subject Tutors are upper-year peer tutors who are trained to help with course content and problem-solving techniques in a variety of subjects. Tutoring is free for students and is offered both in-person and virtually.
  2. Writing and Language Consultants: Writing and Language Consultants are upper-level students who can assist students with a variety of writing and language-related subjects. Services from the Writing and Language Consultants are free for all students.
  3. Supplemental Learning (SL) Leaders: SL is a free, non-remedial, co-curricular service that supports UBC Okanagan’s most challenging courses. SL Leaders are trained undergraduate students who have successfully taken the course before, who re-attend lectures, and act as role models for students. SL Leaders offer weekly peer-facilitated study sessions for students enrolled in select courses.
