Staff and faculty support
Research shows that the first six weeks of a student’s transition to postsecondary are among the most influential in shaping their long-term success, and orientation is where that window opens.
Each UBCO staff and faculty member has helped make our UBCO community what it is — now it’s time for us show up together as a campus to welcome our newest cohort and show these students exactly what kind of community they’ve joined.
Where support is needed
With more than 1450 students moving into residence and 2000+ students expected at Jump Start this year, campus-wide support from staff and faculty is essential to the success of our orientation and move-in events.
A variety of roles and time slots are available throughout the orientation period, with the greatest number of individual supporters needed from Wed, Sep 2 to Fri, Sep 4.

Use the forms below to share your daily availability to support and to indicate any preference you may have for a particular role, shift time, or overall time commitment, if desired.
Support on Wed, sep 2 (move-in day)
Support Thur Sep 3 to Fri Sep 11
Some example preferences you can share:
- you are available for a morning shift on any day but wish to be scheduled for a maximum of 10 hours within those dates
- you would prefer a role where you can sit during your shift
- you would prefer the Orientations team to schedule you wherever there is greatest need
Types of support roles
Residence Move-in Roles
Residence move-in roles vary and include welcoming new students and their families, directing traffic, and assisting with logistics.
Jump Start Roles
Usher
Ushers are campus ambassadors who greet and assist our new-to-UBCO students when they arrive in the Gym for large Jump Start events.
Room host
Room hosts act as the primary point of support for presenters and participants in each assigned space, helping create a welcoming, organized, and engaging environment.
Low sensory concierge
Low Sensory Concierges create a calm, welcoming, and supportive environment for students who may need a quiet space to rest, regulate, or take a break from the stimulation of orientation.
Campus Compass hosts
Campus Compass hosts play a key role in creating a positive first impression by providing a friendly, informative, and organized welcome experience. Hosts help participants feel confident, informed, and excited to take part in the program.
General event support
General event support folks provide flexible, behind-the-scenes assistance and problem solving to ensure that our orientation programming runs smoothly.
