Career Development Week for International Students


MARCH 8 TO 12, 2021

Are you interested in working in Canada? International Programs & Services (IPS) has a virtual career week dedicated to provide advice and support to International Students seeking employment in Canada.  With sessions on networking, resume building, and immigration pathways, this event has workshops designed to set you up for success. You’ll also learn important information on culture in the Canadian workplace, such as etiquette, employee rights, and networking tips.

Career Development Week is happening from March 8 to 12, with different sessions occurring each day. Sessions are free to attend, but advanced registration is required. Scroll below to see what sessions are available.

Session details

Culture in the Canadian Workplace

Monday March 8
1 – 2:30 p.m.

Find out what it’s like to look for work in Canada and what tools you need to stand out and get ahead. In this session, you’ll learn about workplace culture, etiquette, employee rights and more. Discover job preparation strategies and develop key intercultural skills that will help you secure a job.


Equity, Diversity, Mental Health and Personal Safety at Work

Wednesday, March 3 
2 – 3 p.m. 

There are lots of reasons companies are embracing diversity and inclusion in the workplace; it improves productivity, fosters creativity and innovation. Employees from diverse backgrounds can face lack of representation that can impact their mental health and psychological safety at work.

In this session facilitated by international student counsellor Liz Jonas, we look at strategies that can prepare new graduates to ensure inclusion that promotes mental wellness in the workplace.

Rock your LinkedIn Profile

Tuesday, March 9
9 – 10:30 a.m.

Do you need to brush up your LinkedIn profile? Need tips for virtual networking? Whether you’re just starting out on LinkedIn or you’ve already established a profile, this session is for you. Join us for an interactive workshop to help elevate your LinkedIn profile and make the most out of your virtual network. No account required – we can help you set it up.

Post Graduate Work Permit Session

Graduating this term or this year? Find out how to apply for the post-graduation work permit and to remain in Canada as a worker.

Building Your Brand and Networking

Networking can be intimidating! Learn effective tips on how to present yourself and build connections. Later on in this event, you’ll have the opportunity to put these skills to the test and mingle with industry professionals.

Resume and Cover Letter Workshop

Thursday, March 11
5 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Ensure your resume is competitive and up to date with this workshop. Our career educator will share some tips on how to make your application stand out with a strong cover letter and impressive resume.

IRCC & BC PNP Presentation

Thursday, March 11
2 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) staff will be hosting a workshop for students who are interested in immigration pathways to Canada. This is a great opportunity for students to have a chance to interact with IRCC and BC PNP staff, as well as gain a practical understanding of the various immigration programs that are available for international students in Canada.

Career themed Coffee and Tea with IPS/Careers

March 12
9 – 10:30 a.m.

Join IPS, Health and Wellness, and Career Services for a general discussion around the importance of work opportunities throughout your studies. This workshop will give you the chance to ask any questions you might have about working in Canada. Get to know more about the opportunities available to you on campus and why seeking these opportunities early helps with overall wellness.
