Civil Engineering

Hello everyone! My name is Abdirahman Mohamud and I am an international student from Kenya. I am currently in my fourth year of Civil Engineering. A little about myself, I was born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya then I went to a boarding school in a city along the coast of Kenya, known as Mombasa where I completed my International Baccalaureate. I am a football fanatic, I have had the chance in playing in multiple intramural tournaments hosted by the recreational team on campus. Kelowna is quite the small city that you slowly fall in love with, it has got amazing scenic views that are breathtaking. My most recent favourite spot in Kelowna is the Kangaroo Farm, where they have multiple kangaroos hopping around and the best thing is that it’s only 10 min away from campus!

Hi everyone! My name is Alyssa Scott and I am a second year student athlete. I am in the Science department majoring in Biology and in the future I hope to study Medicine. Currently I play for the UBCO Varsity Women’s Soccer team and have played multiple sports since I was little. I was born and raised in North Vancouver, BC but I live in Kelowna during the school year. In my free time I like to get outdoors and explore by trying different hikes or runs, and visit with friends and teammates. Life on campus has turned me into somewhat of a cook and I enjoy forcing my roommates to test out my new recipes. I’m looking forward to the new school year so I can support different clubs, teams and programs the UBCO community has to offer!!

Environmental Science & Biology

Hi! My name is Arianna Johnstone, and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I am in my fourth year of my Bachelor of Science with a double major in Environmental Science and Biology. I am also a proud member of the LGBT2Q+ community. Some of my hobbies include video games, walking in nature, cooking, and volunteering. I volunteer by making content and lesson plans for “Sea Smart” which is a non-profit that helps students learn about ocean conservation, oceanography, and marine biology. My favourite video game is “Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker” and my favourite food is sushi. I also love going on dates with my girlfriend to a restaurant called Renegade. I am excited to meet you, but before then, I will leave you with my favourite quote: “You cannot do all the good that the world needs, but the world needs all the good that you can do.”

Hello, my name is Gus Goerzen and I am a third-year student-athlete here at UBCO. For the past two years, I have studied Engineering and competed for the men’s basketball team; overall I’ve had a great post-secondary experience here in Kelowna. I’m from the Sunshine Coast, a small place near Vancouver, and my interests revolve around sports and music.

Engineering & Computer Science

My name is Hajj, an international student from Nairobi, Kenya. I’m a 3rd year Electrical Engineering student with a minor in Computer Science. I love programming, reading novels, and playing chess during my free time. I’m part of an electrical team at IDS club currently working on a solar bench project to charge phones around campus. Whenever I have time, I like to hang out with friends and grab a Subway sandwich in the Arts and Science building or ice cream from Parlour Ice Cream. When I’m home, I’m always listening to rap music, playing the guitar or gaming non-stop. Sunny weekends are my favourite time to go hiking, biking or running while rock climbing is my favourite thing to do during the cold winter season.

Philosophy, Political Science, & Economics

Hi everyone! My name is Izabela and I’m in my 4th year as an Arts student majoring in PPE (Philosophy, Political Science, Economics). I’m super excited to welcome you to the UBCO community and campus. Since we don’t know each other yet, I’d like to tell you a little bit more about myself. I’ve lived in the Kelowna area for over 12 years after immigrating from Belarus, so I know all the best restaurants, cafes, and study spots. My recent favourites are Central Kitchen + Bar (amazing staff and food!) and Third Space Café (a non-profit that supports free counselling for youth). On a more academic note, I’ve spent lots of time on campus so I can be a great tour guide, address any questions you have about campus spaces, and give you tips on juggling coursework and a social life. I’m really looking forward to meeting you!

Hello! My name is Jo-Elle Craig and I am currently going into my fourth year in the Faculty of Management with a specialty in accounting. I’m very organized, driven and goal-oriented in all aspects of my life. I enjoy helping other people, stepping out of my comfort zone and learning new things. For the past three years, I’ve been a part of the Management Student Association and I am passionate about their motto of creating experiences that inspire, and how they helped me and other students feel a part of a community. I was born and raised in Kelowna, so if you have any questions about Kelowna, I’m a great person to ask. Outside of university, I spend my time going to the gym, studying photography, spending time outside in nature and taking care of my enthusiastic pugador (half labrador & half pug) dog named Bosley.

Hello everyone, my name is Karah (she/her/hers) and I am a fifth-year Science student pursuing an honours major in Biochemistry! I have lived in the Okanagan my entire life, in the summer you can find me on Okanagan Lake paddle boarding, hiking in the mountains, or downtown getting some ice cream from my favourite ice cream shop, Parlour. On campus I work as a Student Ambassador, and I also serve as the Events Coordinator for the Biochemistry Course Union (the BCCU). I am involved in the Society of Scholars and the Society of Scholars Advisory Committee as well as the Life Raft Debate Advisory Committee. Just last year, I completed my honours thesis in a research clinical-based lab that I started volunteering in as a research assistant at the start of my third-year. I also adore dogs, travelling to Maui, and all things related to the Office!

Hi, I am Madison Dunham, a Peer Mentor at UBCO. I completed one year of general Science here at UBCO before transferring into the Nursing program. I am now a third year Nursing student. I hope to be a Labour and Delivery nurse when I graduate. I am a member of the Nursing Course Union. I am originally from Lloydminster AB, but I’ve spent a lot of time in Kelowna since I was young and already loved it here. My favourite thing about Kelowna is the outdoor activities such as skiing and hiking.

Economics & Political Science

I’m Muskaan and I’m a 4th-year student majoring in Economics and minoring in Political Science in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. I’m an international student from New Delhi, India! I’m part of the Society of Scholars group here at UBCO, and it has been incredible so far! I currently work as a research intern with the International Organization of Securities Commission (IOSCO). It is an organization that regulates the world’s securities and futures markets. Additionally, I have worked an array of part-time jobs as a UBC peer staff member. I have been a Jumpstart & Create orientation leader, Destination orientation leader, Statistics Teaching Assistant and an Online Learning Coach. I have been a part of various clubs at UBCO like Relay for Life, Pre-Law, Peer Support Network, and Project Literacy! Apart from all this, I love trying new restaurants with my friends! To compensate for my love for food, I recently started running (it’s been so hard so far)! I also have a blog where I write articles about the plaguing issues in the world to express my opinions unapologetically. And, somehow even with a busy schedule, I always find time for Netflix!

Biology & Education

In 2016 I moved from Winnipeg to Kelowna to start university. I completed my Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Biology and will be starting my post Bachelor of Education degree this fall. Moving from another city, and not living on residence in my first year, I understand the challenges of getting involved and forming friendships. I would love to help you navigate this. I currently work as a site coordinator for Let’s Talk Science Outreach at UBCO and serve as a Peer Supporter for the Canadian Mental Health Association. Since living in Kelowna, I have volunteered for several organizations such as: SWAM Okanagan, Central Okanagan Food Bank, Kiwanis Club of Kelowna, Vintage Church, and Helen’s Acres Community Farm. In my spare time I love going on hikes, bike rides, doing scrapbooking and paint by numbers. I love all country music and can’t wait for concerts to resume.

My name is Sharon and I am a third year Nursing student. I am super excited to be a part of your journey through university and the changes that come along with it. My friends would describe me as a calm, cool and collected individual who is relatable, kind and goal-driven.. I am currently an executive leader of both the African Caribbean Student club and Power to Change student ministry on campus. If you are interested in any of these clubs, definitely reach out to me! My hobbies include writing, baking, watching k-dramas (lol) and fashion. I am ethnically and culturally Nigerian, but I was born in Liberia. So, technically I am a citizen of three countries: Liberia, Nigeria and Canada: that is literally my go to ‘fun fact about me” statement. Anyways, I hope to interact with you more and help you through this rollercoaster ride called University.

Psychology & Indigenous Studies

Tanshi! My name is Sierra, I am an Indigenous student here at UBCO! I am currently in my 4th year doing a double major in Psychology and Indigenous Studies. I’m originally from Calgary, Alberta and moving back to Kelowna in the next few months! A few of my favourite activities include hiking and rollerblading with my dog Theodore, visiting wineries, eating tacos (I highly recommend Latin Fiesta), browsing the farmers marketing fruit stands, along with hanging out at the beach with my friends! I also enjoy exploring many of the little cafes downtown Kelowna to study, read, or drink ice coffee. I look forward to meeting you and creating a great experience this upcoming school year!!
