Greetings from the AVP Students

Ian Cull

Welcome to the AVP Students webpages

From here, you will find links to services and opportunities for students at UBC’s Okanagan campus.

It is our expressed desire for all students to have the same opportunities and the same exceptional living and learning experiences. These experiences could include living and learning with other students in common classes, engaging in service learning, carrying out undergraduate research, studying abroad, and participating in leadership experiences.

Our campus is vibrant, full of life, and offers unlimited potential for students. The AVP Students portfolio is committed to facilitating and celebrating student learning and accomplishment in all of its forms.

UBC's Okanagan campus is an intimate learning and living community. As such, I expect that I will have the opportunity to meet students, hear about their experiences, and share in their time of discovery with us. On behalf of everyone in the AVP Students portfolio, I wish you every success in all you undertake during your time here.

Changing campus culture

In November 2013, Professor Stephen J. Toope struck the Intersectional Gender-based Violence and Aboriginal Stereotypes Task Force. His goals were to address both the gender-based violence and the trivialization of Aboriginal peoples made visible through chants that took place on the Vancouver campus during student-led FROSH events, and to address wider issues of violence and visibility of Aboriginal histories, cultures, and identities in the communities on both campuses.

In response to these issues, the Task Force has developed draft recommendations and invites UBC students, staff, and faculty to review and provide input on them.  Feedback is welcomed until March 5, 2014.

Your voice is a powerful force for equality. Help change campus culture.

AVP Students self-study

During the winter term last year we all participated in the creation and writing of an AVP Students self-study. It is a small encapsulation of the Student Affairs Portfolio. It is a reflection of the excellent work of the folks within the entire portfolio and it gives me great pride to attach my name to it.
